The High School of American Studies Speech and Debate Team is an elite intellectual opportunity for students to collaborate and compete in tournaments throughout the year. The team is currently in 1st Place in all of the New York City Urban Debate League. Last year, the team won 1st Place in the Theodore Roosevelt Association Speech Competition. Members meet one to two times per week to practice their debating skills and speechwriting abilities, usually involving a lot of research, writing workshops, brainstorming sessions with the entire team. Debate is one of American Studies' finest extracurricular activities and is a fantastic competitive outlet for students who wish to earn respect of accolades in a scholarly community.
