About Us

The Environmental Club is an organization dedicated to offering students an opportunity to be environmentally conscious, beautify our school by maintaining our garden, appreciate nature with trips and club events, and take up responsibility outside of school to promote conservation and envioronmental awareness.

Our club is open to all members of the HSAS community. We meet on Wednesdays after school for brief meetings, usually lasting around 15 to 20 minutes.

As part of the club, students have a chance to participate in club events, including working in our garden, hiking in Upstate New York, and going on trips throughout the city to enjoy nearby parks and gardens.

Club Events

Our club is responsible for organizing popular school events, giving the entire student body an opportunity to get a better understanding of what they can do to be environmentally conscious both in the school and out.

One of our most popular events is Pestopalooza, an event in the fall at which students pick basil from our garden and make their own delicious pesto, which is then offered for sale to the rest of the school.

Our semi-annual Compost for a Cookie event pits the grades against one another in a challenge to bring in the most compostable materials over the course of a few weeks. The grade that brings in the most material at the end of the period wins free cookies for all of its students!

Other club events include our bi-annual hikes in Upstate New York, volunteer opportunities in our school garden and in the garden at John F. Kennedy High School in the Bronx, trips to various parks throughout New York City, and other seasonal events open to all members of the student body.

Internship Opportunities

The Environmental Club is proud to offer students opportunities to gain work and educational experience through our partnerships with Wave Hill and the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy Fund. These programs are open to all high school students, and allow for those in the program to gain experience in conservation, beautification, and park management over the course of the summer.
