Getting Into American Studies
The High School of American Studies at Lehman College, along with the Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Technical High School, Brooklyn Latin High School, High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, Staten Island Technical High School, and Stuyvesant High School were established under New York State Law 2590 section-G to serve the needs of gifted New York City students.
Admission is based solely on a competitive examination, known as the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT), open to all eighth and ninth grade New York City students. All applicants must be New York City residents in order to take the examination.
The fall Testing Period for the 2019-20 School Year has ended. Students new to New York City who arrived after the November exams will have an opportunity to take the SHSAT at the end of the summer of 2019.
Test locations in the past have included Bronx Science High School, Suyvesant High School, Long Island City High School, Brooklyn Tech, and Staten Island Technical High School
