Getting into HSAS

The High School of American Studies at Lehman College is a specialized high school established under New York State Law 2590 section-G to serve the needs of gifted New York City students. The High School of American Studies has no role in the admissions process, which is administered by the New York City Department of Education’s Office of Student Enrollment.

Admission to all specialized high schools in New York City is based solely on a competitive examination, known as the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). The SHSAT is open to all eighth and ninth-grade New York City students. All applicants must be New York City residents to take the test.

HSAS hosts Open Houses in the fall for prospective students and in the spring for students who have received an offer of admission. Check back for upcoming dates.
