The ENTIRE 9th grade got an extremely up close look at the innards and heights of the revival style cathedral, St. John the Divine, located in upper Manhattan. The largest of its style in the Americas, the cathedral blends a spectrum of design choices that span medieval Europe through the mid 20th century.
We were mindful of the space, asked great questions and really gained some tactile knowledge of this part of world history.
We can imagine the medieval Europeans walking into these spaces a thousand years ago and being awed by the 120 ft. ceilings, the 50 ft. multi colored stain glass windows that shared narratives for a largely illiterate population and of course the choral music, which we heard too today, filling the vast sanctuary. Our climbing and viewing of this interior from above gave us a phenomenal sampling of this era of history.
We will return to our classrooms tomorrow with this newly acquired appreciation and understanding that few learners our age possess.
